pH Studies
Why are pH studies performed?

Your doctor may recommend that you have a pH study for these reasons:

  • Heartburn, reflux or indigestion, especially when it is not controlled with medication.
  • To determine the effectiveness of medication.
  • To assess the presence and severity of reflux prior to anti-reflux surgery.
Ambulatory 24 hour oesophageal pH studies are one of the best ways to confirm the presence of reflux and its severity. A thin flexible catheter is passed through the nose and down the oesophagus. The nasal passage and throat are numbed with a local anaesthetic spray to place the tube. You may experience some gagging or mild discomfort in the nose or back of the throat but generally this is well-tolerated. The tube is taped across your cheek and attached to a small data recorder worn on your hip and measures pH (acidity) in the oesophagus. The catheter remains in place for 24 hours. The patient can also record when they have symptoms which can be correlated with the pH recording. The data is then downloaded to a computer and analysed by a gastroenterologist.

You will be in at the Cambridge Specialist Centre for approximately 45 minutes

What is the preparation for a pH study?
  • Do not have anything to eat or drink for six hours before the procedure.
  • Take your usual medication in the morning of your appointment with a small sip of water.
  • After the probe has been placed you can eat and drink normally.
  • Inform the Cambridge Specialist Centre before the procedure if you have diabetes or if you are on any blood thinning medication (anticoagulants) such as aspirin or warfarin.

What happens after a pH study?

The following day you will need to return to the Cambridge Specialist Centre to have the tube removed. The information that has been recorded on the monitoring device is then sent to a computer and analysed by Dr James Fulforth who is a gastroenterologist trained in the interpretation of pH studies. You will then have follow-up with your specialist to review the results.
